The sanctuary is named after “ Maï Agoa ”, the mother or spirit of the water in Amerindian mythology.
Agoa sanctuary was created on October 27th 2012.
This is a specially protected area under the Cartagena Convention, more commonly called "SPAW" (Specialy Protected Areas and Wildlife) with reference to the corresponding Protocol. Its status is consequently international.
Agoa is managed by the French Marine Protected Areas Agency (Agence des aires marines protégées).
The Agency is a public organisation dedicated to marine biodiversity conservation and also manages, either directly or in partnership, some other marine areas such as marine nature parks, offshore Nature 2000 sites, and som nature reserves.
